The women’s basketball team of Team USA should have been the focus of all the news on Monday following their historic victory over Japan. However, the supremacy of the United States on the court was insufficient to drive the trolls away.
Reporter Kerith Burke of the Golden State Warriors, who was covering the Summer Games in Paris, shared a sign that a fan had made in the stands prior of Monday’s game on social media. The slogan said, “Caitlin Clark is necessary for us to lose.” During warmups, Burke’s video captured the reactions of teammates Brittany Griner and A’ja Wilson.
When Clark, a multi-record holder and the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, was left off the Olympic team, there was a lot of criticism leading up to the Paris Games. Whatever the motivation, it seems that fans everywhere are fascinated by her exclusion. But Wilson and company will press on, hoping to win an eighth gold medal in a row.
Their next matchup is with Belgium on Thursday. Due to the Olympics, the WNBA is on hiatus, so fans of Clark will have to wait until August to see her play once more.
