JUST IN: Kristen Faulkner’s enormous risk at the Olympics in Paris paid off: “I almost didn’t race.”

Kristen Faulkner, an Alaskan cyclist, experienced a dramatic turn of events at the Paris Olympics, transforming a potential missed opportunity into a triumphant success. Originally, Faulkner was selected for the U.S. Olympic women’s team pursuit squad, a relatively new area for her, as her true domain is road racing. Despite her strength, she narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympics in her specialty after being defeated by Taylor Knibb in the national championships.

Faulkner’s fortunes changed when Knibb resigned from her spot in the road race due to her lack of experience in riding within a peloton. This unexpected development allowed Faulkner to take Knibb’s place in the road race. USA Cycling made the strategic decision to put Faulkner, an experienced and proven winner, in the event.

Undeterred by the initial setback, Faulkner had already shown her dedication by transitioning from the road racing national championships to a USA Cycling track racing camp in Belgium. Her impressive performance there earned her a spot on the Olympic team. Once given the chance in Paris, Faulkner made the most of it, showcasing her talent and determination.

Her journey from nearly not competing to making a significant impact at the Olympics highlights the unpredictability of sports and the importance of perseverance. Faulkner’s story is a testament to seizing opportunities and staying prepared for when luck turns in your favor.
