As speculation swirled about potential NFL interest in University of Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, Longhorns Athletic Director Chris Del Conte was quick to dismiss the rumors. In a firm statement during a media briefing, Del Conte referred to the chatter as “fodder” and reaffirmed the program’s commitment to Sarkisian as the leader of Texas football.
The rumors linking Sarkisian to potential NFL head coaching vacancies began gaining traction following Texas’s strong 2023-24 season, which included a Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff appearance. Sarkisian’s offensive ingenuity and ability to develop talent have made him an attractive candidate for professional teams seeking innovative leadership.
Despite this, Del Conte made it clear that the Longhorns have no intention of parting ways with Sarkisian.
“Coach Sark is our guy, and we couldn’t be prouder of what he’s done here. Any talk of him leaving for the NFL is nothing more than baseless speculation,” Del Conte stated.
Sarkisian’s Impact at Texas
Since taking over as head coach in 2021, Sarkisian has revitalized the Longhorns program. He’s spearheaded significant recruiting victories, developed a high-powered offense, and returned Texas to national prominence.
Under Sarkisian, Texas secured top-tier recruiting classes and notable wins over rivals such as Oklahoma and Alabama. His leadership has been instrumental in setting the stage for the Longhorns’ upcoming transition to the SEC in 2024.
Sarkisian’s Response to NFL Speculation
For his part, Sarkisian downplayed the rumors during his weekly press conference, emphasizing his focus on building a long-term legacy at Texas.
“I’m fully committed to the University of Texas and our football program. We’ve accomplished a lot, but there’s so much more we want to achieve,” Sarkisian said.
With the Longhorns poised to enter the highly competitive SEC, maintaining stability in the coaching staff is crucial. Del Conte’s strong stance against the NFL speculation sends a clear message to recruits, players, and fans: Texas is fully behind Sarkisian’s vision.
As the Longhorns prepare for their bowl game and gear up for their SEC debut, the focus remains on building a championship-caliber program—one that Sarkisian seems determined to lead for the foreseeable future.
