In a significant development for the Penn State Nittany Lions football program, head coach James Franklin has announced the suspension of two key defensive players, linebacker Kaveion Keys and defensive end Jameial Lyons, due to serious legal charges.
Both players, aged 19, have been charged with felony rape and related offenses following an alleged incident in July involving a 17-year-old student at their on-campus apartment.
The charges against Lyons include rape, aggravated assault without consent, and invasion of privacy, while Keys faces charges of rape and aggravated indecent assault without consent.
In response to the charges, Penn State officials have confirmed that both players are no longer enrolled at the university and are not part of the football team.
This development has raised concerns about the team’s defensive lineup, as both Keys and Lyons were expected to play significant roles in the upcoming season.
Head coach James Franklin has declined to comment further on the situation, citing university policy and the ongoing legal proceedings.
The Nittany Lions are scheduled to open their season on August 31 against West Virginia.
