In a surprising turn of events, former Boise State Broncos quarterback Malachi Nelson has announced his transfer to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Nelson, once the nation’s top high school recruit, has had a tumultuous college career, with this move marking his third program change in as many years.

Nelson began his collegiate journey at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2023, where he saw limited action behind Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams. Seeking more playing time, he transferred to Boise State in 2024 but was unable to secure the starting quarterback position, losing out to redshirt sophomore Maddux Madsen. During his tenure with the Broncos, Nelson appeared in three games, completing 12 of 17 passes for 128 yards and one interception.

Despite receiving offers from more prominent programs, Nelson chose UTEP, citing his confidence in head coach Scotty Walden’s vision for the team. He will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Miners.
