Unlike any squad he has ever been a member of, Chase Young finds himself on this one. The 2020 Washington Commanders, who were eliminated in the Wild Card stage of the playoffs, was the only team the pass rusher had ever played for.
Even though Young is a relatively new addition to the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room, he already understands the culture there. Having one of the best rosters in the NFL is not enough to accomplish the ultimate aim of winning a championship. It takes a lot of effort and the pursuit of perfection on the football field, which is what the 49ers aim for every game.
Young recently said, “It’s cool,” in response to a question about being surrounded by such incredible talent, team reporter Lindsey Pallares. Like Coach [Kyle] Shanahan reminds us, we have to put that on the field and truly execute it because, at the end of the day, not everyone will compliment us again. After all, everyone is so talented. We have it written down, but at the end of the day, I have to play that C gap as well as I can.”
“Yeah, it’s all about the two-and-a-half hours you’re out on that field,” said Nick Bosa, Young’s friend and former college teammate, who reconnected in Santa Clara this season. You must be the top team for four quarters, regardless of the type of players you have.”
The 49ers boast playmakers like Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle on offense. Brock Purdy, who holds the franchise record for passing yards in a single season, must be mentioned, of course, as he tosses them the football.
Alongside Bosa and Young, standout defensive players like Arik Armstead, Javon Hargrove, and Fred Warner present difficulties for opposing attacks.
Even with a wealth of talent, getting a big head is challenging. It’s essential to have a team-first mindset in this locker room.
According to Bosa, “Compared to other teams, there’s so many great players on this team that you can’t try and stand out and be the guy because you’ll get humbled.”
San Francisco has this weekend off since they own the best record in the NFC. They will host the team from the Wild Card round with the lowest seed the following weekend at Levi’s Stadium.
There’s no doubt that January football is different, even if the 49ers have constantly emphasized how important it is to give every opponent your whole attention, whether it’s during the regular season or the postseason. It necessitates a higher degree of focus because every opponent can end your season and your dreams of winning the Super Bowl.
“Making that move is a mental thing,” Bosa stated. “Every play is enormous. Additionally, the reason I adore the playoffs is that they eliminate whatever selfishness one may have. I want this many stats, I want that, and so forth. You just want to get off the field and get the offense the ball.
“Sports are rife with selfishness. Everyone is attempting to provide for their family by earning as much money as they can. We’re a fantastic team, no doubt about it, and you’re a selfless player among the group, but my favorite thing about the playoffs is that you just have to do your job, go off the field, and move on.”
