Illinois Fighting Illini assistant basketball coach Tim Anderson has announced an indefinite leave of absence from the team. Citing personal reasons, Anderson revealed that the decision was made after a period of deep reflection, as he plans to prioritize focusing on his family and personal well-being.
“It has been a dream come true to work at the University of Illinois and represent the Fighting Illini,” Anderson shared. “Following a great deal of reflection this offseason, I’ve decided to take some time away from coaching in order to focus on myself and my family. I thank Coach Underwood and everyone who has supported me.”
During Anderson’s three-year tenure with the Illini, the program experienced considerable success, including a Big Ten regular-season championship in 2022, a conference tournament title in 2024, and three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 2023-24 season was especially notable, as Illinois reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005.
Head coach Brad Underwood expressed appreciation for Anderson’s contributions, particularly in recruiting and player development, areas where Anderson had a profound impact. “Coach Anderson has impacted our program in countless ways, both on and off the court. He’s been instrumental in building relationships and ensuring our success,” Underwood commented.
To temporarily fill Anderson’s role, Underwood has promoted Kwa Jones, the director of recruiting and scouting, to assistant coach. Jones, a former graduate manager at Illinois, has a strong coaching background, including experience with the Sacramento Kings and Stephen F. Austin.
Anderson, who joined Illinois in 2021, was previously an assistant coach at DePaul and has a long history of preparing college players for the NBA through his Ground Zero Training program. His leave marks a significant moment for the Illini, but the program will continue to build on the strong foundation he helped create.
Anderson’s return date remains unclear, and the Illinois basketball community has extended its support during this time.
