The NHL recently handed down a three-game suspension to New York Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller following an incident in which he allegedly spat at Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. This unsportsmanlike conduct took place during a February game, leading to a match penalty for Miller. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety deemed the action inappropriate and in violation of league conduct standards, which led to the suspension.
The incident has sparked some debate among fans and analysts, as similar actions in the past, such as by former Capitals forward Garnet Hathaway, also resulted in multi-game suspensions. Some believe Miller’s act was accidental, though the NHL maintained its position based on the visible nature of the action and past disciplinary precedents.
For the Rangers, Miller’s suspension poses a challenge. He is a critical member of their defense and has been having an impressive season, both offensively and defensively. His absence will temporarily limit the Rangers’ defensive options, especially as they manage roster constraints with potential trade moves on the horizon.
