The Las Vegas Raiders have experienced a decline in recent seasons following their 2021 NFL playoff appearance, fueled by then-quarterback Derek Carr, who now plays for the New Orleans Saints.
Back then, Carr was viewed as one of the NFL’s promising young quarterbacks, and the Raiders secured their playoff spot with a thrilling win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the season finale.
However, organizational changes followed, including the departure of coach Jon Gruden and the hiring (and subsequent firing) of Josh McDaniels as head coach.
Former Raiders general manager Mike Mayock shared a theory on Carr’s struggles, suggesting that Gruden played a crucial role in his development, and his departure may have hindered Carr’s progress.
Mayock highlighted Carr’s improvement under Gruden’s guidance and emphasized that during his tenure, Carr became a top-tier quarterback, despite differing opinions about him.
Despite Carr’s departure, he remains the Raiders’ all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, although he never won a playoff game with the team.
The Raiders have since cycled through several quarterbacks, none matching Carr’s production. Mayock also revealed that trade offers for Carr were dismissed due to uncertainty about finding a suitable replacement.
