In a major blow to the Arizona Cardinals, star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has been suspended for six games at the start of the upcoming NFL season. The suspension comes as a result of Hopkins violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). According to the league’s announcement, a test administered in November detected traces of a banned substance in Hopkins’ system, specifically Ostarine, which is used to enhance muscle mass and performance.
Hopkins has publicly expressed his shock and confusion over the suspension, maintaining that he has always been meticulous about what he consumes and has never intentionally taken any banned substances. In a statement on social media, he conveyed his commitment to finding out how the substance entered his system, emphasizing his long-standing adherence to a holistic health regimen.
Despite his efforts to appeal the suspension, Hopkins will be sidelined for the first six games. This absence is a significant setback for the Cardinals, as Hopkins is a crucial component of their offensive strategy. His presence on the field substantially boosts the performance of quarterback Kyler Murray, who shows improved statistics when targeting Hopkins.
The suspension allows Hopkins to participate in preseason activities, but he will miss the initial regular-season games. During his absence, the Cardinals will rely more heavily on their other wide receivers, including newly acquired Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, veteran A.J. Green, and second-year player Rondale Moore.
