Breaking News: Ricky Tiedemann, a promising prospect for the Blue Jays, will have Tommy John surgery

Ricky Tiedemann, a left-hander and the Blue Jays’ top prospect according to MLB Pipeline, requires Tommy John surgery, Toronto manager John Schneider announced to reporters on Saturday.

Tiedemann will have a consultation with Drs. Keith Meister and Neal ElAttrache on Tuesday before undergoing the surgery. Tiedemann’s 2025 season is also in jeopardy because it is anticipated that he would miss 12 to 14 months of action.

Tiedemann has struggled with injuries throughout the season. In April, ulnar nerve inflammation in his left elbow placed him on the seven-day injured list. Earlier this month, left forearm stiffness forced him to miss time due to injury.

The 21-year-old Tiedemann has progressed quickly in the Blue Jays’ farm system this year, having begun the campaign with Toronto’s affiliate in the Florida Complex League for rookies before going on to Triple-A Buffalo and Class-A Dunedin.

Tiedemann had a 5.19 ERA in eight starts over those three minor league levels, going 0-1 overall. In the third round of the 2021 draft, Tiedemann was chosen by the Blue Jays.
