For an undisclosed amount of time, the New England Patriots will be without one of their top defensive players. One of their best defensive linemen, Christian Barmore, a defensive standout, was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend, the team reported on Sunday.
The Patriots continued by saying that although Barmore received treatment, they do not yet have an estimated date for his return to the field.
He started six games for the Patriots in 2023, while appearing in all 17 games, and recorded a career-high 8.5 sacks. That number not only led the team, but it was four more than any other player on the roster.
The Patriots defense was the one bright spot during a brutal four-win season in 2023, and the emergence of Barmore was a key part of that. If he has to miss extended time — and it is probably a good bet that he will given how concerning blood clots are — that would be a significant issue for their defensive front and their pass rush.
The defense is going to have to be the focal point again this season as the Patriots still lack playmakers on offense and are likely to have a rookie quarterback in Drake Maye leading the team. Points should again be an issue.
