Before the July 30 trade deadline, it was anticipated that the Chicago Cubs would be quite busy. With a 50-56 record going into Sunday, the Cubs were six games shy of the last wild-card place.
The Giants, one of the six teams that finished ahead of the Cubs in the race for a postseason berth, are hoping to offload players before the deadline. In spite of where they are in the standings, the Cubs are purchasing.
On Saturday, two prospects were acquired by the Blue Jays in exchange for Nate Pearson. The Cubs kept up their acquisition of players on Sunday, trading infielder Isaac Paredes to the Rays in exchange for utility guy Christopher Morel and two prospects.
The Cubs might make further changes before Tuesday. The Cubs are one of six teams that have contacted the Giants about Blake Snell, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Snell has been the focus of rumours for the previous few weeks, even if he may not be traded. Snell has a $30 million player option through 2025, but adding him would be risky because a successful second half may lead to him choosing to enter free agency.
