Defense end Jadeveon Clowney of the Baltimore Ravens has had a successful season, and he mostly credits it to his offseason program.
As far as the Baltimore Ravens were concerned, their Week 18 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers was basically inconsequential; nevertheless, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney saw something unique.
In order to receive his $750,000 bonus, the 6-5, 266-lb former first-round pick had to achieve a contract incentive. He made sure everyone knew about it during the second quarter by grabbing half of a sack.
As Clowney applied pressure to Mason Rudolph, he disclosed that initially, he wasn’t completely certain that he received the necessary sack.
“I had no idea it was a sack,” Clowney exclaimed. “When I looked back, they said, ‘I think you got it.’ I was excited because, well, I needed it. My intention when I arrived at the game was to try to get on the board. However, as I was playing my game and having fun, I got a lot of texts and DMs promoting incentives and other stuff, which drove me insane.
With that sack, Clowney’s season total reached 9.5, matching his highest return since joining the Houston Texans in 2017. In addition, he had the third-most tackles for loss (9) after Kyle Hamilton (10) and Justin Madubuike (12), as well as the second-most quarterback hits (19) of any Ravens player, trailing only Madubuike (33) in that category.
All of that suggests that Clowney will have a successful first season as a Raven, but who does he give credit to for his ability to perform well this year?
It all began with the workout over the offseason, according to Clowney. “We developed a plan that we carried out during the offseason. When I reached my destination this year, I felt better physically and knew that I was going to give it my best. The work is not yet done; I have to keep doing that throughout the entire playoff run, which I am looking forward to.
