At halftime in the NFC Championship Game, Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers trailed the Detroit Lions 24-7.
While there were still two quarters to go, all hope seemed lost.
The 49ers were unable to contain the Lions’ high-octane offence, and Purdy appeared to be proving all of his critics correct as he collapsed through the opening 30 minutes.
But then Purdy did something in the locker room that he says helped push San Francisco to a dramatic 34-31 comeback victory.
“When I’m down 17 at half, [I prayed], ‘all right, God, you’ve taken me here, win or lose I’m going to glorify you,'” Purdy said this on the 49ers’ official X account. “That’s my peace, that is the joy, the steadfastness.”
At the time of the prayer, Purdy was 7-of-15 for 93 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. In the second half, he went 13-for-16 for 174 yards, leading the Niners to a dramatic comeback.
“That is where I get it from,” Purdy added. That is the honest truth. I leaned towards it. Sure enough, we were able to return.”
In the second half, the 49ers scored 27 unanswered points to go up 34-24. Seventeen of these points came in the third quarter, when San Francisco tied the game.
Purdy, the final overall choice in the 2022 NFL Draft, believes God has led him thus far.
“Yeah, honestly, I think it’s a testament to God and where He’s taken me in life,” stated Purdy. “I’ve never been the biggest, fastest, strongest, any of that.”
And yet, here comes Purdy, with a chance to win a Super Bowl in his first full season as San Francisco’s starting quarterback.
On February 11, Brock Purdy and the Niners will face the Kansas City Chiefs for all the marbles.
