This past weekend, Spencer Rattler of South Carolina was voted Senior Bowl MVP. Recent sources state that at least one NFC East team was interested in him.
Despite playing just two series on Saturday, Rattler outperformed quarterbacks like Michael Penix Jr. of Washington and Bo Nix of Oregon, who are both thought to be first-round selections in the 2024 NFL Draft. Rattler went 4-for-4 for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Although no one thinks Rattler will be selected in the first round, Philly Birds Country’s Jake Rabadi revealed before the game that the Eagles had expressed interest in Rattler and had even met with him. Despite being named the MVP of the Senior Bowl, the 23-year-old quarterback is still seen as a Day 2 or Day 3 prospect, which may work to Philadelphia’s advantage.
Rattler was heavily recruited prior to signing with the Oklahoma Sooners as a four-star recruit fresh out of high school. After throwing for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2020, he was considered for the Heisman Trophy. He transferred to South Carolina where he had consecutive 3,000-yard seasons and 37 touchdowns for the Gamecocks from 2022–2023 after being benched for Caleb Williams.
The Eagles may use another quarterback, as Tanner McKee is the only player signed to cover Jalen Hurts. Thankfully, Philadelphia will have plenty of opportunity to select Rattler in the later stages of the draft since the team is expected to earn three compensatory fifth-round selections and an additional third round selection in the upcoming draft.
Not too long ago, after awarding Carson Wentz a $128 million, four-year contract extension the previous year, the Eagles shocked everyone by selecting Jalen Hurts in the second round. Hurts inked a $233 million, five-year contract in April. That turned out quite nicely, but could the past happen again?
Although most view Ritter as a project, the Eagles can afford to take their time with a talented, affordable quarterback if they so want, as Hurts is signed through 2028.
