BREAKING NEWS:The Penrith Panthers Icon Argues That Supercoach Wayne Bennett Shouldn’t Be Signed By South Sydney

An stalwart of the Penrith Panthers argues against supercoach Wayne Bennett being signed by South Sydney

If South Sydney chooses to appoint Wayne Bennett as their coach once more, they must make sure they are not faced with the same hopeless situation in two years.

Son of Rabbitohs royalty John Sattler and 2003 premiership winner with Penrith, Scott Sattler, spoke to AAP on the precautions the club should take following the dismissal of Jason Demetriou, Bennett’s pick to succeed him when he leaves Souths at the end of 2021. “I probably wouldn’t make that decision at Souths, solely because of Wayne’s genius in man management and coaching,” Sattler remarked.

Being a team that hasn’t seen a premiership in almost 40 years, I could understand Parramatta if Brad Arthur’s job was in danger. “I think it’s a vicious cycle to go back and replace the guy that Wayne endorsed, even though he did a great job at Souths over three seasons.”

After firing Jason Demetriou this week, Sattler thinks the South Sydney Rabbitohs shouldn’t hire former coach Wayne Bennett again.

Bennett was successful during his time at Redfern before agreeing to become the first coach of the Dolphins.

Sattler acknowledged that he could see why the Rabbitohs were interested in Bennett, a seven-time championship winner. After nine rounds, Souths are in last place, and most of the players who Bennett led to two preliminary finals and a grand final are still there.

In Sattler’s opinion, Souths CEO Blake Solly is among the finest, if not the greatest, in the business, and he is astute enough to consider a variety of factors before accepting this coaching position. Many Souths members may argue that they require achievement now, but in three or four years, would we still be discussing these same issues?
